Installing St. Augustine, Bermuda, or Zoysia grass involves a similar 5-step process focused on soil preparation, moisture management, and proper layout, typically installed as sod for immediate results. The most crucial steps across all varieties are installing within 24 hours of delivery, ensuring tight, staggered joints (like brickwork), and keeping the sod consistently moist.
General Installation Steps (All types of grasses)
Prep the Area: Clear debris, weeds, and old grass, applying herbicide if necessary.

Soil Amendment & Grading: Till 4–6 inches deep, incorporating 2–3 inches of organic compost for nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. Grade 1 inch below walkways to avoid uneven turf.

Lay Sod: Begin along the longest straight line, staggering joints in a brick-like pattern, ensuring tight seams without gaps.

Installation of Grass Using Plugs
Installing grass plugs is an economical alternative to sod. It follows a universal 5-step grid installation, but spacing and timeline variations change drastically between St. Augustine, Bermuda, and Zoysia.
Universal Plug Installation Steps

Mow and Clean: Cut any existing vegetation in the area as short as possible. Clear out rocks and aggressive weeds.

Water the Night Before: Thoroughly water the target dirt area the evening prior. Moist soil is easier to dig and prevents the plug roots from drying out instantly.

Dig a Checkerboard Grid: Use a step-on tool like a ProPlugger or a drill-attached soil auger to dig holes 2 inches deep. Space them diagonally in a diamond/checkerboard layout.

Fertilize and Insert: Drop a small pinch of starter fertilizer into the bottom of each hole. Press the plug firmly into the hole so the grass crown sits flush with the surrounding ground level. Step lightly on the plug to crush out any air pockets underneath.

Establishment Watering: Water the area immediately. Give the plugs a deep soaking every single day for the first 14 days to ensure the root ball binds with the native soil.
